Gary and Edie Jones have been on the field in the Philippines since 1980. Gary was raised in Galesburg, Il. And Edie was born in the Philippines and was raised there until her family moved to California when she was 15. Gary came to know the Lord at 17, through the faithful witness of his grandmother. While a student at Bob Jones University he was called to preach, but refused the Lords calling. He was drafted in 1969 and sent to Vietnam. While there he realized he could not outrun God and surrendered his life to full time service. He returned to Bob Jones where he me Edie, they married, and Bethany Baptist Church of Galesburg, Il.sent them to Manila under GFA Missions.
Lighthouse Baptist Church, a bilingual church, in Imus, Cavite, began with just a handful of believers. That ministry grew and in 1990 it was turned over to the national pastor that Gary had trained. In 1990 Lighthouse Bible Believers Church was started in Metro Manila. God has faithfully provided young men to assist, one being Josh, Gary and Edies oldest son. During the week there are five Bible studies and a discipleship program. Although it is 83% Roman Catholic, there is such an openness to the gospel in the Philippines. Most of their membership are first generation Christians. From Lighthouse, 3 churches in the provinces have been started and are being pastored by men trained at Bob Jones Memorial Bible Institute. The biggest hindrance would be the rapidly growing Charismatic groups that attract many who leave Catholicism in search of the truth. The biggest stumbling block is ingrained fear and superstition blocking their minds to the truth.
They have four children, all adults now. Pray their new discipleship program will affect their church tremendously and produce dedicated disciples for the Lord. Their advice to someone who wants to become a missionary: work on knowing the Lord through dedicated study of His Word. Serve Him faithfully in your church. Learn to die to self each day that Christ may be glorified in you and that God will give you a sensitive heart for the lost souls to be a witness for Jesus consistently.
